All the News!
Greetings everyone. I have so much exciting news and a few prayer requests for you all. I am devoting a post to it rather than just updating the list to the right!
So on Friday I had a Skype conversation with my friend Alex Marks who is living in La Libertad right now with his family from Ohio. There are some really cool and exciting things going on in the La Libertad community and definitely ways you can contribute!
Firstly, they have launched a clothing store out of the upstairs room in the church. The US Navy has partnered with us and had been such a huge blessing donating a TON of clothes and supplies to sell. Why sell it, why not just give it to people in need? This is a great question. Most of the items in the store are only 25 or 50 cents. This may seem silly, but the sense of dignity that people get from being able to purchase a needed item for their family is actually very enabling compared to just taking a handout. In addition the $100-$150 a month in extra revenue for the church is a huge help in other areas. The store is being headed up by a local woman in the church which is also great because it gives the people in the church a sense of ownership and responsibility for the great things they can do with the resources they have.
Next is the nutrition center. So much great news! We have nine new children signed up who will be added to the group making it close to fifty children that we are now serving! Praise God! Fifty children that get to experience the love of God, have a safe place to spend time, and get a full belly. PRAYER REQUEST: We are believing God to bring us the resources to be serving 100 kids by the end of the year! I'd love your prayers that peoples' hearts would be moved to sponsor these kids and that the people of La Libertad can love and serve the children effectively. Along with this anticipated growth, we will also be moving the center into a new space! This new space will allow for rooms devoted exclusively to the children's ministry. Right now we are using the larger church space as kind of an "everything space" which is making it very difficult to do any of the tasks as effectively as possible. By moving the children to their own space we will be able to more effectively minister to them as well as the older kids in the English class so they don't have to try and listen over the din of the youngsters playing. We are anticipating this move to be in early July so there is another thing to pray for!
As I just mentioned, one of our faithful friends Evelyn is currently teaching an English class three days a week to a group of high-school aged kids. She already has a lot on her plate, so I'd love for all of us to be surrounding her in prayer for her family, herself, and that the lessons are effective and that God gives her the strength to fully tend to all of her responsibilities. She is such a faithful servant and cares for her family selflessly.
Finally, I'd love prayer for this last bit of the support raising process. I am feeling really hopeful about this week, like it could be my last week! The past month has been a bit brutal, but I have a few appointments this week and am hoping to get in touch with some people I have been waiting on. Please pray that God move people to give generously. $270 per month people! That's it! I know God can do, I just want to see it and then ceaselessly praise him for it on the other side!
Standing in awe of all there is to praise the Lord for,
Sigourney
