The Week(s) in Review

So another year in La Libertad, another group of students using their college spring break to serve and grow, and another time of deep thought and questions.

As I said in my last post, God showed me a lot just in my first few days about humility and servitude.  In the first few days that I was there alone I had such a great time taking in the sun, reconnecting with old friends, and feeling part of the community.  I had the opportunity to attend a church service where pastor Ivo spoke and to see what it was like to be part of the church down there under "normal" circumstances.  Claudia, my "sister" in El Salvador, and I joked that I was like a celebrity for the first few days because everyone was calling wanting to spend time with me!

When the team arrived on Sunday, after missing their connecting flight on Saturday and having to stay the night in Houston, we got right down to business.  Since they had lost a day, we did not want to waste anymore time and so they dove head first into the activities we had planned for the week.  These included cooking food for a poor community, sharing the gospel, serving the children at the nutrition center, serving at an orphanage, among other things.  I was and still am so very proud of how are team we was willing and able to adapt and do whatever was needed at any given moment.  This team impressed me especially because they seemed to gel really well and no one knew each other before the trip!  They exhibited a true spirit of servitude and took every opportunity to serve and help wherever possible.  However, don't take my word for it, look at the proof!

Sorting clothes to distribute to families in need.

Cultural experience on the last day visiting one of El Salvador's many volcano.

Sharing the gospel!

Teaching English in a local school.

Painting a classroom at a local school.

Sharing the gospel with some boys in the street.

Mixing concrete by hand at the construction site.

Overall it was a great time of serving, growing, and seeking the Lord.  After the team left on Saturday morning I stayed for a few more days until Wednesday.  I got to go to the beach again with some friends, attend a birthday party (for which I baked a carrot cake!) and just live a normal daily life there.  I went to the voting center with a friend to see how an election works in El Salvador, saw how the hospital works (very different!) and many other things.  I feel so blessed to have had that time and really feel like God affirmed my desire to be there.  Honestly it has been really hard to be back at home.

I am sure in the coming weeks as I explore more about how I feel, what I learned, and what God is showing me through these couple weeks in El Salvador I will have more to say.  In the meantime feel free to leave a comment, give me a call, or shoot me an email and I'd love to talk more!

I am praying that God will give me the strength and motivation to finish support raising soon.  I miss my friends and practically family in El Salvador, and really feel as though God has given me a purpose there.  Please join me in prayer for my friends there, and to FINISH SUPPORT RAISING!

Standing in awe of God's transcending power,

Sigourney
