Risk it!: Prayer Letter 8

Confession: I have a reading problem.  I cannot just read one book.  For a while I was reading two books while listening to a third on audio all in addition to my Bible reading plan.  I finished one book and the audio book and thought I had become a rational human being again, but I have since started reading three more!  However, God has strangely used this madness to speak to me.  In one book about prayer, there are questions at the end of each chapter and this last set really made me think.  One question in particular struck me: "What seems 'off limits' in your prayer life?"  In one of the other books that I am reading, Radical Together by David Platt, he challenges the reader to consider what good things we have in our lives that are preventing great things from happening.

In both of these questions I think it all boils down to how much we trust God.  In my life I have had a lot of flaky friends and often felt abandoned and alone.  As a result I don't trust God with everything for fear that He will do the same.  So when I ask myself "What is off limits in prayer?" if I am honest, it is usually the things I care most about because I don't want to relinquish control (even though I never really had it in the first place).  I think this question interacts with Platt's question in the sense that we would rather be comfortable with good things than put it all on the line and trust that God is going to come through with GREAT things.  So consider what you don't trust God with.  Where in your life could you risk more in order to receive something great from the Lord and allow his glory to shine?  Maybe it's that job that you have secretly always wanted but always been too scared to apply for so you settle for one you can tolerate, or maybe it's going on the mission trip you have always wanted, but been to scared to go by yourself, or even just befriending the loner in your class.  Whatever it is, consider what you are willing to risk in order to see God glorified.

Ok on to some really exciting news!  So to preface, you can check out the video below for more of the story, but long story short, New Life Church officially closed on the house next door this week!  This is a dream we have had for years, to own two acres in the heart of Ann Arbor to serve as a place of ministry and to be a light for Christ in the middle of the darkness that often takes place on campus.  It is a huge beautiful old house that is going to serve as offices and a center for ministry so that the current church building can be freed up to better serve the youth ministries as well as provide more parking which we desperately need!  Thank you all of you who have been part of making this possible either through prayer or financially.

You can also click here for the sermon that Steve Hayes gave with more details.

Lastly, I want to remind you all to check the right panel for updates on prayer requests and PLEASE send me your prayer requests!  I like feeling like you are not all invisible!  Finally, I want to personally invite each of you to attend a service at New Life Church if you never have.  I have recently taken to sitting in the back of the auditorium simply to observe all of the students worshiping the Lord.  I am repeatedly awe struck by God's power and majesty in the beauty of their worship.  So this is my official personal invitation, PLEASE COME!  Starting Labor Day weekend service times will be 9:19am, 11:11am, and 5:05pm on Sundays.

Standing in awe God's creativity,

Sigourney
